This patch of the eastern Maitland side goes back to the mid-19th century, but most of the housing is later: post-war and 1980s suburban estates of brick-veneer detached houses, older fibro cottages around the original village, and newer townhouse infill on the fringes.
The numbers tell the same story. Census figures put it at 88 per cent separate houses and 1,235 dwellings in an area of just over two square kilometres. Most of those homes were plumbed decades ago, with drainage to match.
The ground does the rest. Streets fall from around 40 metres out west down to 10 metres near the Hunter River, so waste lines run on grades that carry everything downhill to the flat eastern edge.
