Take the lid off the cistern and lift the float cup up, then hold or prop it there. That stops the refill the same way.

Old towels around the base, and keep everyone away from the wet area until it is disinfected.
Do not reach for the caustic stuff while the bowl is full. It rarely shifts a real blockage and it makes the job nastier for everyone, including you.

Overflow questions, answered
Should I keep flushing to try to clear the blockage?
No. Every extra flush adds water to a bowl that is already full, and the second flush is usually the one that goes over the rim. One flush told you everything.
Where is the shut-off for the toilet?
Most cisterns have a small tap on the inlet pipe near the wall. Turn it clockwise. If it is seized or missing, lift the cistern lid and prop the float up.
Is an overflowing toilet always a blocked drain?
Not always. A jammed inlet valve can spill a cistern for hours, and a surcharged sewer in a storm pushes water up through the lowest fixture, which is usually the toilet.
Can I tip supermarket chemicals into a full bowl?
We would not recommend it. Caustic products sitting against a blockage can splash back when the water moves, and they do nothing against tree roots, the usual offender in the older streets.
Will the water coming up be clean?
Assume not. When the sewer is the problem, the bowl fills from the sewer side, so treat every overflow as waste water and disinfect the floor once the flow has stopped.
