We're licensed plumbers working this suburb and the neighbouring Hunter suburbs week in, week out. Most days are spent on the older brick-veneer streets and the newer townhouse infill, doing the everyday jobs that keep a house running.

Why this suburb keeps us busy

The housing does it.

Housing here runs from fibro cottages near the original village through 1960s to 80s brick-veneer estates, and plenty of those homes still carry first- or second-generation hot water units well past their best.

The gardens do the rest.

Established gardens and mature street trees in the older streets push roots into clay drainage lines that were laid decades ago. It's the single most common reason a drain out here blocks more than once.

Then there's the lie of the land.

Streets fall from the high western side down toward the Hunter River flats, so waste and stormwater lines run on grades that concentrate flow at the low eastern edge. After a heavy Hunter Valley downpour, that's where the trouble shows up first.
