Blocked Sewer Tenambit

A blocked sewer shows itself at the lowest points first: the toilet, the shower or the laundry gurgling and rising together while everything above them backs up.

That is a shared line under pressure, not a single fixture with a bad trap.

Plumbers Tenambit clears sewer lines across Tenambit and the neighbouring suburbs, and we check the cause before quoting any repair. One slow fixture is a drain problem; several fixtures protesting at once needs gear sized to match. Call (02) 4063 3455 and we will get it moving.

Signs It Is the Sewer, Not Just a Drain

The whole house acts up together when the shared line chokes.

  • Gurgling from the floor waste or toilet when the washing machine empties
  • Water rising in the shower or basin while another fixture drains
  • A toilet that fills higher than normal, then drops slowly
  • A wet patch or unusually green strip in the yard where the sewer runs
  • A sewer smell outside near the boundary or inspection opening

One of these points downstream. Two or more together point straight at the sewer.

Why Sewers Block in the Older Streets

The housing stock explains most of it. Much of the suburb went up between the 1960s and the 1980s, brick-veneer on established blocks, and the cottages near the original village sit on even earlier lines. Clay and earthenware were the standard back then, and clay joints shift, crack and open hairline gaps that roots follow.

Then the gardens finish the job.

Mature trees in the older streets push roots into those joints, build a mass inside the pipe, and catch everything washing down behind them. Each blockage after the first arrives faster than the last.

The slope adds its own twist.

The ground falls from around 40 metres on the high western side down to 10 metres toward the Hunter River flats, so waste lines run on grades that pull flow downhill hard and drop debris where the fall eases near the bottom of the catchment.

Reactive clay soil moves with the seasons too, working those old joints harder still. It is a combination we deal with every week out here.

What We Do on a Blocked Sewer

A plunger will not touch this job, so the method matches the scale.

Clear the line

Electric eels and high-pressure jetting cut through root masses, silt and debris, and jetting strips the pipe wall instead of punching a hole through the middle of the blockage

Camera the pipe

A CCTV run records cracks, displaced joints and root intrusion, so the repair decision rests on footage rather than guesswork

Locate the fault

We mark where the problem sits under the yard, which keeps any excavation as small as it can be

Quote the fix

Sound pipe, clearing is the whole job. Cracked or jointed apart, and you get the repair or replacement quote in writing before anything starts

Everything this work needs travels on the truck from the first visit, including the CCTV and jetting equipment.

How the Job Runs

  1. 1

    Call and tell us

Ring (02) 4063 3455 and tell us what's going on in Tenambit. We'll ask a few quick questions so the right gear is on the truck the first time.

  2. 2

    Quote before work

You get the price before anything starts. No call-out fee, no hourly surprises, and you either approve the quote or we shake hands and leave, no charge.

  3. 3

    Clear, check and show you

We cut the blockage out, run the camera behind it, and put the footage on the screen so you can see what caused it and whether the pipe is worth a repair quote.

  4. 4

    Backed, no questions asked

If something isn't up to standard afterwards, we come back and make it right, no questions asked. That's the standard every Tenambit job is held to.

When Roots Keep Coming Back

A sewer that blocks again after clearing has a reason, and it is usually the pipe itself. Roots regrow into the same gap they found, so the camera run decides what happens next.

  • Sound PVC or intact clay: a clear-out and sensible habits are often enough
  • Cracked clay with root intrusion: repairing or replacing the section stops the cycle
  • Joints displaced by ground movement: replacement quoted on the footage

The full picture lives on the drainage hub, and if the line needs the heavy treatment, hydro jetting and CCTV drain inspections are on the same run. For single-fixture blockages, blocked drains covers that job on its own page.

The Same Run Next Door

Raworth, Morpeth, Berry Park, East Maitland and Metford all sit on the regular run, so a blockage at a rental, a shop or the in-laws' place nearby is one call either way. The housing out this way shares the same era and the same pipe materials, so the diagnosis rarely surprises.

Blocked Sewer FAQs

How do I know it is the sewer and not just one blocked drain?

One slow fixture points at that fixture. When the toilet, shower and laundry gurgle or back up together, the blockage sits downstream in the shared line, and that is our call.

Will clearing the sewer fix it for good?

Clearing restores flow on the day. If the camera shows cracked clay or shifted joints, the repair quote comes in writing, so you know what the lasting fix costs before deciding.

Who owns the sewer pipe between the house and the street?

The private line from your house to the boundary connection is the owner's to maintain. Hunter Water looks after the main in the street, and we clear and repair the private side.

How long does a sewer clear-out take?

A straightforward root or debris blockage is usually cleared in a single visit. If the line needs a camera run afterwards or a repair quote, we tell you before any of that starts.

Is a sewer backup dangerous inside the house?

Yes. Waste water carries health risks and soaks into flooring and walls. Keep people and pets out of the affected rooms, turn off the water if the bowl is rising, and ring us.

Do you camera the line after clearing it?

We recommend it. The footage shows what caused the blockage and the state of the pipe wall, so you are not guessing whether the same roots will find their way back in.
